What is School Self Evaluation SSE

 The Board of management has a duty to ensure that the school is taking part in School Self Evaluation (SSE). This is really the whole school community (parents and students must be included) under the direction of the board looking at what is working well and what can be improved. To date we have looked at LITERACY, NUMERACY, ASSESEMENT. We are looking at KEY SKILLS IN THE JUNIOR CYCLE this year. We have developed School improvement plans (SIPs) and published them on the school website.
Year 1 Literacy
•Providing an all over standard to every student
•We cannot assume that all students have the same prior knowledge so that we need to ensure that we tease out the meaning of words in different contexts so that all students have the opportunity to have the same understanding of topics being covered.
•Penmanship and neatness of presentation
•Raising self-esteem of students – for whatever reason, some students start second level education with poor confidence levels. We need to use every opportunity to affirm their work and we need to see the good in every effort. We can then point out what needs to be corrected, but only after praising what is good.
Year 2 Numeracy
Whole School approach to Numeracy Strategy for 2014-2017
Teachers to be encouraged to be good role models for numeracy by showcasing to students the way they use mathematics in their professional life as well as specific content areas pointing out the need to avoid sharing any personal maths fears or a personal dislike of mathematics.
The development of specific strategies to be used in Junior Maths classrooms in order to improve student numeracy (2014-2017) to be employed daily, weekly or monthly
•Creation of keyword vocabulary books/Keyword Wall with generalised definitions to promote cross-curricular usage of vocabulary/ Inclusion of templates for ‘keyword lists’ into staff diaries
•Use of KWL in the classroom (What do I know? What do I want to know? What have I learned?) (Handout Included)
•Use of LUVE2CU in the classroom (Look at the question/Underline the important keywords/Visualise the problem with a sketch , flowchart etc/Estimate an answer/Choose the numbers and calculate the answer/Check your answers against the estimate/ You have completed your task) (Examples Included)
•Generate awareness of common maths misconceptions so that these can be targeted over the course of the school year
•Pair work and group work/ receiving a group grade (once a week)
•Solving open ended questions and providing multiple solutions to those problems (once a week)
•Use maths in a way that relates to a work setting
•Participating in maths games/ competitions/ maths teams (inter-school and in-school levels)
•Encourage students to use multiple representations of data whenever possible
•Use of school IT for maths classes to encourage increased representations of data
•Common Calculator
•Recording of the numeracy moments in the classroom
The development of cross–curricular strategies for improving numeracy across the Junior school curriculum during 2014-2016
•Fractions – Percentages – Give test results as fractions
•Gather/create examples/samples of material of mathematical connection to their own subject area – magazine articles, newspaper articles, journals to show students that maths is relevant to all disciplines.
•Use maths in a way that relates to the subject area – Identify areas where students can use maths in other classrooms or extra-curricular activities –: timing/ measuring/ record keeping/ chart making/ graph plotting for representing data/ pattern, connection and proportion recognition.
•Spot the Maths competition – (announced to First years in January)
•Numeracy Week – 8th -12th December 2014 – Maths Quiz (12th December for 1st years) , DEAS (Drop Everything and Sudoko), GATEWAY numbers
•Limit Calculator use where Applicable
Working specifically with students with additional numeracy needs
• Team teaching
• Pair and group work
• Cross age peer tutoring– senior to junior cycle/ junior cycle to primary level
• Appropriate IT software usage
Year 3 Assessment

• Subcommittees for Literacy, Numeracy & AFL.
• CPD & Advising Examiners on staff.

• Maths Eyes Project.
• There is awareness and a willingness of staff to try new approaches and to share good practice.
• There is a deep sense of care for students exhibited by all staff of this school and this is embedded in this schools culture.
• 92% of teachers often engage in co-operative learning
Summary of main areas requiring improvement as identified in last SSE:
• More focus on a greater range of assessment
• Greater emphasis on displaying student work
• Team-teaching and co-teaching
• Academic Mentoring of Second and Fifth Year Students 2015-16
Year 4 – Key skills for new Junior Cycle
Work ongoing – Survey on curriculum completed by all staff with plans to survey a group of Transition year students in the coming weeks.
